Born Gary Grice on this date in 1966 in Brooklyn, New York, GZA has long been revered as one of the sharpest lyricists in Hip Hop history. His wordplay, imagery, and intellectual approach to rhyming have solidified his place among the culture’s most respected MCs.

Before Wu-Tang Clan became a global phenomenon, GZA pursued his craft as “The Genius,” releasing his debut album Words From The Genius in 1991 through Cold Chillin’ Records. While that project didn’t find major commercial success, destiny soon aligned when he linked with his cousins Robert “RZA” Diggs and Russell “Ol’ Dirty Bastard” Jones to form the foundation of Wu-Tang Clan. By 1993, the Staten Island collective had changed the Hip Hop landscape forever with their debut Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), ushering in a new era of raw lyricism and street philosophy.

GZA’s own solo career reached new heights with the release of his 1995 masterpiece Liquid Swords, widely regarded as one of the greatest Hip Hop albums of all time. He would go on to release additional solo projects and even bridge science with Hip Hop through his Netflix series Liquid Science, blending his passion for knowledge with his cultural influence.

Today, GZA is celebrated not only for his contributions to Wu-Tang’s legacy but also for his role in inspiring generations of lyricists to elevate their craft.

ZAThe Source salutes Allah Justice on his 59th birthday, with peace, health, and many more years ahead.
