After Quentin Tarantino decided to scrap what was meant to be his tenth and final film, the director shifted his focus to an original theatrical play he was writing. Now, some early details have emerged, and it’s probably not what anyone was expecting.

First reported by the Daily Mail, the play will be an “old-fashioned British farce, in the door-slamming, trouser-dropping, mistaken identity vein of Brian Rix or Ray Cooney.” Something like Michael Frayn’s Noises Off.
Variety has confirmed that Tarantino will indeed make his directorial comeback with the play, adding that it could open next fall in the West End. The Daily Mail said that the director has been negotiating with some “big Hollywood stars” to appear in the play, but Variety has heard it “could be an ensemble comprised of rising and well-known actors.“

“Oh, the play is all written. It is absolutely the next thing I’m going to do,” he said last year. “It’s absolutely my next project. And we’ll start doing it. We’ll start the ball rolling on it in January. Because I just figure it’s like the first of the year.“
Tarantino added, “I just, you know, it’s probably going to take up a year and a half to two years of my life, all right? Because if it’s a success and I got to do the tour version of it and you know, all that kind of… I’m preparing for it to be a success. If it’s a flop, then I’ll be done very quickly. But even starting from scratch, it’ll probably be a year before it’s in front of an audience. So rather than dick around and everything, I was like, no, no, okay, I’m having a great time with my kids and with my family and everything.“
Why Did He Scrap The Movie Critic?
As for why Tarantino decided not to move forward with The Movie Critic, he simply explained that he wasn’t feeling as passionate about it as he should. “I knew I had done it, but I didn’t really want to do it that much… I wasn’t excited about dramatizing what I wrote,” he said. “The thing about The Movie Critic is I really, really like it, but there was a challenge I gave myself when I did it, both as a series and as a movie: can I take the most boring profession in the world and make it an interesting movie. Who wants to see a movie about a f***ing movie critic?“
