MARIO DUPLANTIER On New GOJIRA: More Big Guitar Riffs & More Metal

French progressive metal titans Gojira have been riding an unprecedented wave of success since the release of their 2021 album Fortitude. In just four years, the band has not only expanded their global footprint — they’ve reshaped what it means to be a metal band in the modern era.

Among their many recent milestones, Gojira became the first metal band to perform at the Olympic opening ceremony, a historic achievement that preceded their GRAMMY Award win for the same collaboration. Since then, the band has toured extensively with Korn, lined up an upcoming run with Metallica, and even appeared at the all-star Back To The Beginning farewell concert for Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, placing them firmly in the upper echelon of the genre.

In an interview with Le Parisien, drummer Mario Duplantier gave a brief but revealing update on the band’s highly anticipated eighth studio album, due in 2026.

“It’s almost finished. We’re going back to big guitar riffs and a more metal, but more modern, sound,” Duplantier said. “There are two more songs to refine. We wanted to move quickly, but we didn’t succeed. We thought about it so much that we almost got lost. It’s harder to match our tastes than when we were 20, and that’s normal.”

All of this is to say that I personally, very much need heavy Gojira back in my life. Mario, if you’re reading this, hit me up. I can keep a secret. In the meantime, you can catch Gojira at one of their approximately ten thousand tour dates coming up in both 2025 and 2026.
