The Sgt. Rock DCU movie has gotten a new update, with DC Studios co-head James Gunn revealing a disappointing status about the film’s original director.
What is the latest Sgt. Rock update?
Speaking to Josh Horowitz during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Gunn was asked about Sgt. Rock’s status. Gunn revealed director Luca Guadagnino won’t be returning to the film, but that doesn’t mean it’s over.
“Hugely,” Gunn said about his hopes of the film returning soon. “I’m really excited about Sgt. Rock.”
The status of a Sgt. Rock DCU movie has been a rocky one. The movie was initially announced in 2024, with Academy Award nominated director Guadagnino attached, with Justin Kuritzkes writing it. Later in 2024, reports surfaced that Daniel Craig was set to play the titular role. However, in early 2025, it was reported that Craig had never agreed to the role, and Colin Farrell was actually in talks to lead the project.
Things continued to go south for the movie, with a new report in April suggesting that production on the film had come to a halt. It’s unclear now where things stand, but whenever Sgt. Rock does pick back up, they’ll have to find a new director to step behind the camera.
Created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, the character is described as “a tough-as-nails leader of Easy Company, the combat unit fighting Nazi forces in Europe.”
