Hallelujah!
Let me introduce you to the second issue of Uncut Greats! For this month’s issue, which is out on Friday, our cover star is George Harrison. Inside we’ll be providing a countdown of George’s top 20 greatest albums, his greatest singles, and telling his extraordinary life story. We’ll also be zooming in to provide extra detail on particular periods of interest from our own investigations.
We’ll hear from Phil Collins about his part in All Things Must Pass. We talk to one of George’s oldest friends, Klaus Voormann, who recalls encountering the young guitarist in Hamburg, and ended up becoming his housemate at the height of Beatlemania. We’ll also hear from longtime collaborators, actor pals and even his Beatle colleague Paul McCartney about the George they knew.
Paul told us about George’s first taste of Indian culture – surprisingly, during the filming of a bicycle scene in Help.
“I remember putting our bikes down and – it seemed out of nowhere – this swami guy appeared,” Paul told David Cavanagh. “He gave us each a book on hatha yoga and was saying what a great thing it was. George became intrigued.
“And then he visited India, and his love for the country, and the spiritual side of things, really blossomed. He picked up a sitar and started to learn it, and we asked him if he would play it on “Norwegian Wood” – which introduced the sitar to the Western world.”
