Many of the greatest bands of all time have lost original members or undergone breakups that have subsequently resulted in the formation of a spin-off band, sometimes just as successful as the original. Perhaps the most obvious example is New Order, who formed from Joy Division after the death of lead singer, Ian Curtis.
Though not entirely a spin-off band per se, after Kurt Cobain died and Nirvana broke up as a result, their drummer, Dave Grohl, started his own band, Foo Fighters. The band started as a one-man project, but blossomed into a phenomenal, multifaceted, Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame-inducted rock band.
Tragedy also struck Grohl’s second band after Taylor Hawkins, Foo Fighters long-time drummer and backup vocalist, passed away in 2022. This past July, the band celebrated their 30th anniversary with the release of the single “Today’s Song.” Now, they are taking the stage and embarking on a major tour for the first time in over a year.
Dave Grohl Teased The New Tour In A Video On YouTube
So far, the Foo Fighters have announced tour dates in Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, and Mexico throughout October and November 2025. This month, they played two surprise shows in San Luis Obispo and Santa Ana, California on September 13th and 15th, respectively. These two shows were the first look at their new drummer, Ilan Rubin, who will be accompanying them on tour this fall.
Though they have only announced tour dates overseas, the band released a video on their YouTube account entitled “A Message from Foo Fighters,” which ends with text on screen that simply says “Stay tuned… There’s more to come!!!”
The video is just over one minute long, and acts as both an announcement of what’s to come, and also a bit of a satirical commentary on technology and artificial intelligence. Each member of the band appears on-screen and gets increasingly absurd, from gibberish on a setlist that Grohl is holding, to him introducing Rubin as their new drummer, complete with ten arms.
The announcement itself is very lighthearted and silly, as Grohl explains at the beginning, “It’s been a while, but I’m happy to announce that Foo Fighters are coming back to bring you that 100% real, raw, human element of rock ‘n’ roll,” proceeding to pointedly make fun of AI. The message at the end, however, of course is the takeaway: More is still to come!
