One of electronic music’s most enduring partnerships has come to a close after Cosmic Gate, the German duo behind a number of generational trance anthems, announced that co-founder Bossi is departing, leaving his partner Nic to carry the project forward alone.
The Grammy-nominated duo launched Cosmic Gate in 1999, when trance music was finding its footing as a commercial and cultural force. Following the turn of the century, they amassed a catalog that effectively recontextualized the genre and earned them a devoted global following.
Tracks like ‘Exploration of Space’ and ‘Fire Wire’ became fan-favorites, not to mention their classic 2001 remix of Tiësto’s ‘Urban Train.’
In a statement posted to social media, the duo described Bossi’s exit as a mutual and considered decision, rooted in his desire to step away from the demands of touring. The announcement struck a tone of warmth rather than tension, framing the split as a graduation of sorts rather than a rupture.
It’s a big moment for fans who came of age with the tandem’s music. The trance music community, which prizes loyalty and longevity, will be watching closely to see what Cosmic Gate becomes in its next form.
“After 27 years together, Bossi has made the decision to step away from touring, and that step means he will be leaving Cosmic Gate entirely,” the duo wrote. “This decision comes with deep respect, gratitude, and friendship. What we built together, side by side, and had the privilege to share with all of you around the world is something truly rare and beautiful, something we are most proud of.”
Nic will now retain the Cosmic Gate name and has signaled that new music is already in the works. His first appearances as a solo artist are scheduled for next weekend, with sets in Manchester and at Armin van Buuren’s Rotterdam-based A State of Trance festival.
