Mike Voss is a name we’ve seen a few times on Spice on the Beat, but he’s one person I never mind bringing back because if he’s in your corner, he’ll support you like no other. His career growth as an artist is one to be studied, continuously putting his best foot forward to create something elevated compared to his last release. His newest release, Spark, is produced entirely by another familiar Spice name, the dynamic duo that is known as Blckteeth. They put their innovative twist on each song, creating beats entirely different from the preceding one to compile a dynamic yet cohesive EP of just 5 songs. Although the project is only 11 minutes long, you’ll be moved to tears by the end of it as you experience Voss is a light like never before as he details his father’s ongoing journey with cancer. The final song, an ode to his dad, illustrates Voss’s ability to pour himself into a song and entirely open his heart to his listeners. While the project features other beloved Philadelphia artists such as GXLDmine, who’s talent and execution is far beyond his age, and Hashland, who’s diverse skillset and beloved fanbase sets him far apart in such a competitive music community, Voss holds his own and delivers on every single track, proving why he’s one of Philly’s Phinest. Voss and I had the opportunity to sit down together and talk about his project, which you can check out below:
Additionally, Voss will be premiering a short film to Spark, directed by Philadelphia power-house film-maker, Liam Rosay, on Friday, January 7th in Fishtown. The line-up is completely stacked, the venue is beautiful, and the film is incredibly phenomenal. When I asked Voss about the project, here’s what he had to say:
“Based off his recent EP with the same title, “SPARK” is not quite a short film and not quite a music video. It’s more of a ‘visual story’ based on real life, written by Mike Voss himself and directed by frequent collaborator Liam Rosay.
There is no dialogue in “SPARK”; it only features music from the EP to narrate its plot. But again this is not a music video, as there are no rapping performances from Mike. Instead the multi-talented artist flexes his acting muscles, telling an honest, relatable story without saying a word.
The moral of that story? To light the fire of motivation, first you have to spark a change.”
