Today we celebrate 60 years of Anthony Terrell Smith, better known to the world as Tone Lōc, one of the most distinctive voices to ever come out of the West Coast.
Born in Los Angeles in 1966, Tone Lōc helped usher in a new era for rap music at the close of the 1980s. With his unmistakable gravel toned delivery and effortless cool, he carved out a lane that blended street sensibility with mainstream appeal. At a time when hip hop was still fighting for radio space, Lōc broke through in a major way.
His 1989 debut album Lōc-ed After Dark became a cultural milestone. Powered by the smash singles “Wild Thing” and “Funky Cold Medina,” the project went double platinum and made history as one of the first rap albums to achieve that level of commercial success. “Wild Thing” alone became the first rap single to be certified platinum, a groundbreaking achievement that proved hip hop could dominate pop charts without compromising its identity.
Beyond the numbers, Tone Lōc represented something bigger. Alongside contemporaries like N.W.A., Ice T and Young MC, he helped solidify Los Angeles as a major force in hip hop. While others leaned heavily into hardcore narratives, Lōc balanced charisma, humor and streetwise storytelling, giving the West Coast another dimension during a pivotal time in rap’s expansion.
He also successfully crossed over into film and television, appearing in projects such as Ace Ventura Pet Detective, Blank Check and numerous animated series, further expanding hip hop’s footprint in mainstream entertainment. His voice became just as recognizable on screen as it was on wax.
Over the years, Tone Lōc has endured health challenges but continues to be celebrated as a pioneer whose contributions helped lay the groundwork for generations of West Coast artists who followed. His influence can still be heard in the bounce, swagger and personality driven style that defines so much of today’s music.
Sixty years in, Tone Lōc remains a symbol of an era when hip hop was breaking barriers and rewriting the rules of the music industry.
Salute to a West Coast legend. Happy 60th birthday, Tone Lōc.
