First Look at GOD OF WARS Series Brings Ryan Hurst’s Kratos and Callum Vinson’s Atreus to Life — GeekTyrant

Prime Video’s live-action God of War series is officially in production, and we’ve got our first look at Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus.

If you’ve been curious about how Sony’s legendary PlayStation franchise would translate to live-action, this first image gives us a solid taste of the tone and scale they’re going for. It’ll be more interesting when we see some actual footage. It looks strange seeing Kratos in live action.

The adaptation of the PlayStation Studios classic comes from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, and it’s already secured a two-season order.

The series is led by Ronald D. Moore, who serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Moore is known for his work on Battlestar Galactica, Outlander and For All Mankind, and he’s now stepping into the world of Norse mythology with Kratos and Atreus at the center of the storm.

The story follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they set out on a deeply personal quest to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye.

Along the way, the series explores the complicated dynamic between the two. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

Hurst looks like a natural fit for the Ghost of Sparta. He brings the physicality and intensity the character demands, and if you’ve seen his past work, you know he can deliver the emotional weight too.

Vinson steps into the role of Atreus, the young warrior navigating his own identity while dealing with a father who isn’t exactly the warm and fuzzy type.

The cast around them includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, with Ed Skrein as Baldur. Max Parker takes on Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson steps into the role of Thor, and Teresa Palmer plays Sif. Rounding out the ensemble are Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.

Frederick E.O. Toye, known for his work on Shōgun and The Boys, will direct the first two episodes, setting the tone for the epic journey ahead.

The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

There’s a lot riding on this adaptation. The God of War franchise is one of the most celebrated titles in PlayStation history. Fans expect strong emotional storytelling and brutal action.
